ScienceTech unveils new facility

London Inc. Weekly 11 • 02 • 2018 London Inc. WeeklySCIENCETECH INC. HAS officially unveiled its new 13,000-square-foot head office and manufacturing space at 1450 Global Drive.

The facility features new dedicated testing labs, expanded manufacturing space and a new shipping dock for larger products and projects.

ScienceTech has been, for a little while, about 38 people. This expansion allows us to hire about 15 more over the next three years,” said president Scott Hafekost in an interview with AM980 CFPL.

“We’re hoping to get into more standardized manufacturing as well as take on larger projects―very big orders for weird custom solutions.”

Launched in 1985, Sciencetech designs and manufactures optical spectroscopy instruments used in a variety of applications and fields, including medical research, biotechnology, space science, analytical chemistry, material research, pharmacology, applied physics, and aerospace.

“What we really do with that is we use light to analyse samples, measure samples, see what effect light has on researchers’ samples,” explained Hafekost.

“A large part of our business is solar simulation, helping researchers with equipment they need to develop more efficient solar cells [and] solar panels, with hopes to eventually be more sufficient on green energy.” London Inc. Weekly 11 • 02 • 2018 London Inc. Weekly

YMCA completes regional merger

London Inc. Weekly 11 • 02 • 2018 London Inc. WeeklyAFTER MORE THAN a year of working toward unification, the YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario and the YMCA of Western Ontario are officially one legal organization under the banner YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, effective November 1.

The unified organization will serve the full region from Windsor in the west, north to Goderich, south to Point Pelee National Park and east to Woodstock, and will be focused on creating lasting impact in all communities served for generations to come.

The unified YMCA is led by Andrew Lockie as CEO. Former interim president and CEO of YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario, Kathi Lomas McGee, has taken the role of senior vice president of operations in the new association.

Lockie said the decision to unify was not based on cost savings, but rather on the belief that together, a unified Y could have even greater and lasting impact on local communities.

“This is about doing more with more. Together, we’ll be able to serve more children, youth and families with an even stronger governance and operational model, including improved staff supports and opportunities.”

Together, the two associations are expected to serve more than 190,000 people in the region at nearly 200 different locations.

This unification is one of the first in Canada as part of a larger strategic movement by YMCAs nationally to strengthen their capacity and impact on local communities. The new organization will be led by a board that includes a combination of members of each individual association’s former board and new membership, as well as an amalgamated leadership team with senior staff from both associations. London Inc.
