EVERY YEAR, WE receive over 200 nominations for our annual 20 Under 40 program. Each nominee is talented and gives back to the city in some way, and selecting only 20 is an extremely difficult task.
To choose the 20 Under 40 Class of 2018, our editorial team narrowed the nominations down to a shortlist of about 45 candidates. Those nomination were sent to our incredible team of judges who devoted considerable time to poring over the nomination packages. Once the marks were in, the judges gathered to discuss and debate, and finally the Class of 2018 was selected.
In choosing the 2018 recipients, we were helped by Marilyn Sinclair, president & CEO of TechAlliance, Meaghan Jansen, co-founder of Employee Wellness Solutions Network, Mark Malerba, vice president of Metropolitan Maintenance, Chris Costello, owner of Exodus Escape Rooms London and Windsor, and Matthew Wilson, associate at Siskinds LLP.
So what is it that the judges were looking for? After all, in selecting the 20 Under 40 recipients, we by no means look at similar types of achievements. How do you compare this entrepreneur to that doctor, or this food processor to that creative artist?
The criteria the judges came back to over and over was achievement in the sense of completing or creating something. To be a 20 Under 40, the nominees had to not only have done their job and done it well, they had to have built something, demonstrated success outside of the task at hand or moved a project past a significant hurdle.
To be a 20 Under 40, it’s not enough to work hard and play hard—you must change the playing field.
As a group, the 20 Under 40 Class of 2018 displays a strong entrepreneurial bent—they’re innovative self-starters with a strong sense of community. Not only are they a hopeful sign of what our city is to become, they are a barometer of what our city is right now. And that is something of which we all should be proud.
