Meet the Londoners working to make a meaningful difference in our community
Christy Bacik, Managing Director, Freedom 55 Financial, and Chair and Chief ChangeMaker, 2019 United Way Elgin Middlesex Campaign
Passion: United Way Elgin Middlesex
“THE ROOTS OF serving and supporting community extend back to my childhood and youth. My mom was always heavily involved in volunteering and served on the United Way cabinet. I remember going out to different events with her.
I was honoured to be approached by two people at Canada Life that I really respect about chairing this year’s United Way Campaign. I am fortunate to work with a strong cabinet and to have Canada Life’s support behind me, 100 per cent, as I am doing this volunteer work in addition to my full-time job.
United Way Elgin Middlesex is the region’s largest non-government funder of social services. People often don’t realize that their friends or neighbours are using services that rely on United Way funding. One of our biggest challenges is engaging the next generation of donors and volunteers. We try to share stories that will resonate with people and show the impact of what we do.
London is home to some vulnerable and at-risk people. As a city, we have social issues that are unignorable, including homelessness and child poverty. It’s up to all of us to come together to move the needle and make change happen.
I care deeply about this community and I believe United Way is the best way to have the most impact locally. I may be the Chief ChangeMaker for this year’s United Way Campaign, but I think all of us can be ChangeMakers—whether it’s by making a donation or volunteering time or taking action.”
