Toyota Extends Shutdown of SWO Plants

Toyota extends shutdown of Woodstock and Cambridge plants citing COVID-19 concerns and slumping sales

TOYOTA CANADA ANNOUNCED today it is extending its shutdown of two area plants by two weeks a day after it learned that a second employee at its Cambridge plant had tested positive for COVID-19.

According to a company statement, Toyota’s Woodstock and Cambridge operations and their 8,500 workers will be idled until April 20 because of a downturn in vehicle sales.

“These are uncertain and unprecedented times and we do not take these decisions lightly,” the statement reads. “This extended shutdown is a balanced approach to secure our future and we will make additional adjustments as necessary.”

The extended shutdown affects all Toyota plants in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
