Fanshawe launches new OHS program

Fanshawe introduces new health and safety program in anticipation of post-pandemic demand

FANSHAWE COLLEGE ANNOUNCED on Monday the launch of a redesigned Occupational Health and Safety certificate program that will prepare eligible graduates for occupational health and safety work in a post-Covid world.

“The pandemic has underscored the need for occupational health and safety technicians to maintain a safe working environment,” says Mark Hunter, associate dean of the School of Public Safety. “This program, aligned with the new CRST certification, is a significant addition.”

The program curriculum covers Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) competency categories, including applied safety fundamentals, auditing and risk management, with a focus on communication, workplace dynamics and workplace diversity. The program includes course modules on topics like law and ethics, risk management and workplace hygiene.

The program, delivered on a part-time and online basis, will prepare students for their Canadian Registered Safety Technician certification, the school says, with the program having been designed to meet the formal education requirements set out by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals.

With an expected increase in demand for health and safety technicians post pandemic, the school says that this program will prepare grads for work in both the private and public sectors, in industries ranging from forestry to education to the military.

Graduates of the program will be awarded an Ontario College Certificate and will be able to go on to write their CRST examinations.

“This part-time program, taught by experienced occupational health and safety professionals,“prepares much-needed technicians for the frontlines of workplace safety,” adds Brenda Henry, senior manager of Environment Health, Safety and Emergency Services at Fanshawe.
