WestJet suspends London-Toronto service

WestJet to suspend London to Toronto flights until June amid low travel demand

WESTJET HAS TEMPORARILY suspended operations to four more Canadian cities due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic on air travel demand.

The Calgary-based airline announced Thursday it is halting flights to London, as well as Lloydminster and Medicine Hat, Alberta, and  St. John’s, Newfoundland, until June 24.

Service between London and Toronto will cease on March 22.

In a statement, WestJet CEO Ed Sims blamed the route suspensions on plummeting travel demand caused by domestic and international travel restrictions and quarantine requirements.

“Unfortunately, with new and increasingly restrictive policies, we are left once again, with no other option than to suspend service to these communities,” Sims said.

The airline said it will resume service between London and Toronto on June 24 and those with tickets booked for the suspension period will be contacted.

WestJet’s overall passenger volumes are down 90 per cent year-over-year. The carrier — along with Canada’s other main airlines — has cancelled all of its Caribbean and Mexico flights through to the end of April at the request of the federal government.
