HOME IS OUR house, apartment or condo. It extends to our building and street, our neighbourhood, our shopping area and our workplace. Beyond that it is our schools, parks, bike paths and infrastructure.

London is made up of people from vastly different cultures and backgrounds, and marvellous institutions of higher learning, healthcare, commerce and government. All these are the ingredients of our city, the place we’re from ― the place we call home.

That being said, our identity, our brand and our reputation seems under assault. The last 18 months have tested us. Covid panic, lockdowns, economic challenges, anti-maskers, anti-vaccinators and hospital protests. We’ve seen a horrific tragedy befall a beautiful Muslim family on our own streets from a terrorist attack. We’ve seen violent assaults and the increased use of weapons on our streets.

“Our response to these issues must be compassionate as well as bold. We must set a new bar for caring.  We must do everything, and then some more”

Homelessness and the challenges of the marginalized have become more prevalent. Political protest and disrespect of elected officials in our city has become national news. Our highly rated Western University, home in the last few weeks to two year’s worth of new students arriving to experience higher education for the first time, has been rocked with a horrific beating death and violence towards women.

Our reputation is under assault, and sadly for good reason. There is so much to be celebrated here, but we must not relent until we cleanse our quiet, fair, moderate and accepting city of our recent turmoil.

Our response to these issues must be compassionate as well as bold. We must set a new bar for caring.  We must do everything, and then some more. We must set the narrative going forward and provide the national media with reason to sing our praises.

Stand up, get involved and be part of the solution. Our great city and its citizens can rise to this challenge. The victims deserve it.
