IN OUR WONDERFUL city and region, housing affordability is a challenge faced by many.

There are great developers and builders working to affect change and improve housing supply, and thus affordability. They lobby government, participate on committees, make enormous investments and bet on our combined future. Of course, they’re in pursuit of profit, but in the process many of these leaders, with their decades of experience, help to guide us forward.

I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge something else they’re doing, selflessly, because they know how and because they can.

“Builders recognize an effective solution when they see it, and they’re stepping up. In our region they are quiet champion’s working to end homelessness”

We have a growing problem in our community that is deadly and eats at the soul of our city: the plight of the homeless. Just as this challenge grows and seems unsolvable, real solutions are on the horizon. There are amazing organizations at work ― Indwell, Unity Project, Ark Aid Mission, Atlohsa, Mission Services, YOU, Salvation Army, London Cares, 519Pursuit and other health service providers.

We have direct experience with Indwell, a supportive housing model that has a proven 50-year track record in Ontario. They know how to turn a one-dollar donation into ten dollars of funding. They know how to build, effectively and sustainably. They take the pressure off our shelters and hospitals by making housing that works for those who never thought they’d live off the street.

Indwell has projects moving forward in London, St. Thomas and Chatham. They are a great model for the solution.

The development industry has taken notice. Builders recognize an effective solution when they see it, and they’re stepping up. In our region they are quiet champion’s working to end homelessness.

Regardless of our short-term pandemic challenges, it’s wonderful to know many developers and builders and their families are helping the most vulnerable among us ― and that’s holiday spirit worth celebrating!
