20 Under 40: Shobhita Sharma

Meet Shobhita Sharma, 36, marketing and communications manager with Scapa Industrial, and one of our 20 Under 40 Class of 2021 recipients

A FORMER JOURNALIST, press secretary and now a top-of-the-line marketing and communications professional with Scapa Industrial, Shobhita Sharma arrived in London from New Delhi, India at 18 years of age, and from that day forward has been a tireless advocate for progress and change in our community. In both her professional life and extensive volunteering efforts and initiatives, she has weaved a passion for equity and inclusion into all her endeavours, from steering London’s fight against racism and oppression (she is the current co-chair of the city’s Community Diversity and Inclusion Strategy) and helping immigrants and newcomers find meaningful employment to championing no-cost programs for families in need.

How has the last two years changed the way you approach your work and its place in your life?

The past two years have really been transformative for me. As I ­continue to work from my home office, I have a new ­appreciation for how I prioritize work and my personal life. I am focused on leading and excelling at work and in my ­volunteer roles, and I am just as committed to taking time for myself and finding joy in the small things.

What advice would you offer your younger self?

My advice to my younger self would be to take one step and a time, and stress less over ­factors beyond my control. I have always been an eager, enthusiastic person, and I like ­planning five steps ahead of where I am. But, over the years, I have learned to be more ­flexible and open to change. I have also learned to keep a cool head even in difficult situations. Things always come together in the end.

What’s left for you to do — ­personally or professionally?

I am very proud of all that I have achieved ever since moving to Canada, when I was 18 years old. I have learned sincerity and hard work are always appreciated and rewarded. I want to continue giving back to the community as a volunteer and as a leader, as a gesture of gratitude.

You’re off on your dream vacation — where to?

To the Amalfi Coast! But, if I had to pick a place in Canada, I’d love to go back to Vancouver Island.

Where are you taking an old friend for dinner?

Oh, London has so many good options! I’d take them to either Hunter & Co. or Dimi’s Greek House for dinner, and then to Milos Craft Beer Emporium for some brews.

And finally, what’s your guilty pleasure?

Shoes. Anyone who knows me knows how much I enjoy shoes. Interview by Kieran Delamont
