20 Under 40: Danielle Martens

Meet Danielle Martens, 37, associate partner at Davis Martindale and one of our 20 Under 40 Class of 2023 recipients

A VETERAN OF the accounting industry for 18 years and joining Davis Martindale in 2011, Danielle Martens continuously escalated through the firm ranks, from entry-level associate to her current position of associate partner. Working predominantly with lawyers to quantify loss claims resulting from accidents or incidents, she credits great mentorship for helping her realize success, and now works tirelessly to return that guidance to the firm’s students and young associates.

What would you say is your biggest accomplishment in business?

My single biggest business achievement is my role growth on the insurance an litigation team at Davis Martindale. I am proud to have climbed up the ladder from an entry-level associate position to my current position as an associate partner. I hold this role with great appreciation for all the mentors in my life, and of course, our hard-working team.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your younger self?

To not get discouraged or think that your goals are out of reach. If I went back to myself in high school and said to myself that I was going to get a specialized designation in forensic accounting and become a forensic accountant — and not live in Toronto — I wouldn’t have believed it. It is important to talk to as many different people as you can and to find a mentor that can help you. A good mentor is priceless because they can help you visualize the process and determine the steps you need to take to achieve your goals.

What’s left for you to do, personally or professionally?

I am looking forward to continuing the growth of our insurance and litigation team at Davis Martindale. The development and mentorship of our associates and future CPAs is a role I take to heart. From training our associates on loss litigation practices to showing them the unique opportunities they have within the accounting field, I take pride in being able to be a mentor for others, because I know my mentors were significant in guiding me down the path I walk today.

 

You’re marooned on a desert island – what’s the one thing you’re bringing with you?

I am fair skinned and would burn in a second — so definitely sunscreen!
