Alfredo Caxaj Honored with appointment to the Order of Canada for outstanding contributions to arts and culture

TD SUNFEST FOUNDER Alfredo Caxaj has been appointed as Member to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

As founder of Sunfest-London Committee for Cross Cultural Arts, Inc., Caxaj has been the driving force behind numerous initiatives that have significantly enriched London’s cultural landscape, including the signature TD Sunfest ― the free-admission festival of music, dance, crafts and cuisine from around the globe, which takes place each summer in Victoria Park. Known as “Canada’s Premier Celebration of Global Cultures”, TD Sunfest will mark its 30th edition July 5 to 8, 2024.

Arriving in Canada in 1985 from his native Guatemala, Caxaj has served form more than two decades as the executive and co-artistic director of TD Sunfest, and has also contributed to a wide range of arts initiatives, including contributing to the JUNO Awards Global Music Advisory Committee and serving as a juror for the Ontario Arts Council, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts. Caxaj is also a frequent guest panelist at various national and international music conferences.

According to a release from the office of Governor General Mary Simon, “the recognition comes in acknowledgment of Caxaj’s contributions to the arts, as well as his efforts in promoting diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism in Canada.”
