LIKE EVERY ENTREPRENEUR who launched a business early in 2020, Jessica Witka was blissfully unaware that her new venture, Jessica’s Painting, would be sideswiped by a pandemic. Witka’s saving grace was that trades and the construction industry were permitted to complete work already in progress.

“I feel that you need to help the community first, and then the community will help you”

“I’d been painting for more than 14 years, so I had built a good rolodex of contractors and that’s what kept me going,” she recalls. “After I completed my jobs, I did some new ¬construction work and kept myself busy.”

Fast forward to today, and Witka, a Red Seal-certified painter and decorator, oversees a flourishing young business that has already been on the receiving end of numerous awards and accolades, including a finalist nod from the London Chamber for Small Business of the Year in 2023.

“Make sure you do something you enjoy because it will reflect on your work,” says Witka. “I enjoy what I do, so it is easy to have a great attitude with clients and employees.”

Equally important, she stresses, is to remember the role a business extends far beyond its operations and revenue generation. “I feel that you need to help the community first,” she says, “and then the community will help you.”
