AS THE FOUNDER of a criminal defence firm, Nicola Circelli Law, Nicola Circelli has built a practice defined by rigour, empathy and an unwavering commitment to justice. Having appeared at every level of court in the province, she approaches each case with full investment, particularly when advocating for clients navigating mental health challenges.

“Fairness has always driven me,” she says. “I couldn’t ignore it when something felt unjust, and criminal defence gave me a place to actually do something about it.”

Establishing her own firm provided the autonomy and accountability she sought, fuelling a determined work ethic that continues to shape its growth. “Building something entirely yours is its own kind of motivation,” Circelli says.

Forthcoming about the emotional weight of a vocation where outcomes can alter lives, she has learned to balance that responsibility while protecting her own well-being. “Protecting my own mental health while still showing up fully for my clients took real intention to figure out,” she explains.

Today, she defines success not by a packed calendar, but by building a sustainable practice. “You can’t wear all the hats at once — trying to will break you,” she advises. “When I’m working, I’m working. When I’m with my family, I’m there. The line between the two used to blur constantly. Ambition doesn’t have to mean grinding at all hours; it means being intentional. Presence, not just productivity, is what keeps everything sustainable.”
