From the Middle East to Canada and America: Ahmed Gouda’s career building the infrastructure of the future

Ahmed Gouda demonstrates how construction knowledge can move across borders, adapt to different environments and be applied to new generations of infrastructure

FOR MORE THAN two decades, civil engineer and construction professional Ahmed Gouda has built his career around one central challenge: how to successfully plan and deliver increasingly complex infrastructure.

His professional journey has taken him from major industrial and manufacturing developments in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, to transportation and urban infrastructure in Canada, and now toward the next chapter of his career in the United States — where the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data centres is creating a new generation of infrastructure challenges.

Each stage has added a different dimension to Gouda’s experience.

A Foundation Built in the Middle East

Gouda developed an important part of his construction background in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, working in project-controls roles with AMANA Contracting.

His experience included industrial and manufacturing developments involving internationally recognized organizations including ARAMCO, Pfizer, IKEA, ABB, Toyota, Total and Almarai.

These were environments in which successful construction depended on far more than field execution. Complex projects required detailed scheduling, cost engineering, risk management and coordination among contractors, consultants and engineering disciplines.

The experience gave Gouda exposure to multinational project teams and demanding construction programs while developing expertise that would eventually travel with him across continents.

Over the course of his international career, his experience has expanded across more than 50 projects and multiple sectors.

But the next stage of his career would require him to apply those skills within a very different construction environment.

Bringing International Construction Experience to Canada

Canada became an important turning point in Gouda’s professional journey.

As a Senior Project Manager with Clearway Construction, he moved from the industrial environments that characterized much of his Middle Eastern experience into major Canadian civil, transportation and urban infrastructure.

Working in Canada required Gouda to adapt to Canadian construction standards, regulations, contractual practices and stakeholder structures while continuing to apply the project-management and project-controls disciplines developed earlier in his career.

His responsibilities included coordination among contractors, engineering consultants and other project stakeholders, together with scheduling oversight, cost control, risk management and project reporting.

More importantly, his Canadian experience placed him within projects whose impact extended beyond individual construction sites.

They were part of the infrastructure supporting the continued growth of the Greater Toronto Area.

Contributing to Toronto’s Transportation Infrastructure

One of the major programs associated with Gouda’s Canadian experience was Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown LRT.

The Crosstown represents one of Toronto’s most significant transportation infrastructure developments.

Clearway’s involvement included wet-utility construction along one of the city’s busiest urban corridors — an environment where construction had to be coordinated around existing infrastructure, permitting requirements, engineering interfaces and the activities of numerous project participants.

For a project-management professional, these conditions create a particular challenge.

Construction progress cannot be considered independently. Schedule decisions can affect utilities, contractors and other scopes of work. Engineering decisions can affect cost and constructability. Delays in one area can create consequences elsewhere.

Gouda’s background in project controls, scheduling, cost management and multidisciplinary coordination was directly applicable to this type of environment.

It also demonstrated something important about his career: experience developed on industrial projects thousands of kilometres away could be successfully adapted to the requirements of major Canadian public infrastructure.

Supporting the Development of Toronto’s East Harbour

Gouda’s Canadian experience also included involvement with work associated with Toronto’s East Harbour and waterfront development environment.

East Harbour represents more than an individual construction project. The area is being developed around a major new transit hub intended to connect GO Transit and the Ontario Line and support the continued development of Toronto’s eastern waterfront.

Once completed, the East Harbour Transit Hub is expected to serve approximately 100,000 transit users every day, while development in the surrounding area is expected to support more than 50,000 jobs.

Projects of this scale require extensive coordination between existing infrastructure, new construction, transportation systems, public authorities, engineering teams and future development.

For Gouda, working within this environment further expanded his experience from individual construction delivery toward the broader coordination challenges associated with major urban infrastructure.

The significance of such work is measured not simply by what is constructed today, but by how the resulting infrastructure supports communities, transportation and economic development for decades afterward.

Canada as a Bridge Between Two Chapters

Gouda’s Canadian experience became an important bridge in his international career.

The Middle East had provided exposure to large industrial and manufacturing developments.

Canada added experience delivering infrastructure within a highly regulated North American environment and working around complex transportation systems, public stakeholders and urban communities.

Together, those experiences created a professional foundation extending across different construction markets, delivery models and sectors.

That foundation is now becoming increasingly relevant to another infrastructure challenge: the extraordinary expansion of digital infrastructure in the United States.

The Next Chapter: The United States

The next stage of Gouda’s career is focused on the United States and the rapidly developing field of mission-critical and hyperscale data-centre construction.

Artificial intelligence and cloud computing may appear to exist primarily in the digital world, but the systems behind them depend on enormous physical infrastructure.

Data centres require buildings, electrical distribution, cooling infrastructure, utility capacity, specialized equipment, supply chains and highly coordinated construction programs.

Before those facilities can operate, multidisciplinary teams must determine how they will be designed, procured, constructed and delivered.

That makes pre-construction increasingly important.

Gouda’s career has progressively moved toward this early stage of project delivery, where decisions concerning constructability, schedule, cost, procurement and risk can influence the performance of an entire construction program.

The experience accumulated across industrial developments in the Middle East and complex infrastructure in Canada provides a foundation for addressing these challenges in the United States.

Building the Physical Infrastructure Behind America’s Digital Future

The scale of America’s digital transformation creates a construction challenge as much as a technological one.

Artificial intelligence, cloud services, online financial systems, healthcare technology, communications and countless digital businesses ultimately depend on physical facilities capable of providing enormous amounts of reliable computing capacity.

Delivering that capacity requires professionals who can connect engineering decisions with practical construction realities.

Gouda’s experience across project controls, cost management, scheduling, constructability, procurement coordination and risk management provides a perspective developed through different types of major projects and different construction markets.

His objective in the United States is to apply that accumulated knowledge to increasingly complex mission-critical infrastructure and to continue developing the methods used to plan and deliver large-scale projects.

It represents a natural progression.

Industrial projects taught him how complex facilities are planned and controlled.

Canadian transportation and urban infrastructure demonstrated how those skills could be adapted to major North American projects involving numerous stakeholders and significant public impact.

The United States now provides an opportunity to apply that combination of experience to infrastructure supporting one of the most consequential technological developments of the coming decades.

Experience That Crosses Borders

The most distinctive element of Gouda’s career may ultimately be its progression across markets.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates provided the foundation.

Canada demonstrated his ability to transfer that experience into a different regulatory, construction and cultural environment while contributing to infrastructure serving Canadian communities.

And the United States represents the next chapter.

Rather than treating each country as a separate career, Gouda views the experiences as cumulative.

Lessons learned managing schedules and costs on industrial projects can influence how risks are identified during pre-construction. Experience coordinating stakeholders on Canadian transportation infrastructure can inform the management of multidisciplinary teams on mission-critical facilities.

The projects change, but many of the fundamental challenges remain interconnected.

From Building Projects to Building What Comes Next

Infrastructure has always shaped economic development.

Railways, highways, manufacturing plants and transportation networks defined earlier periods of growth. Today, data centres and the energy and utility systems supporting them are becoming another essential layer of infrastructure.

For Ahmed Gouda, participating in that transition represents the next stage of a career already shaped by large and complex construction programs.

His journey from the Middle East to Canada and now the United States demonstrates how construction knowledge can move across borders, adapt to different environments and be applied to new generations of infrastructure.

The next chapter is not simply about constructing another building.

It is about contributing experience accumulated over more than two decades to the physical infrastructure that will support America’s continued technological and economic development.
