Virtual therapy in Ontario: How it works and how to choose a therapist

Understanding how virtual therapy works and can make the process easier and more manageable

ACCESSING MENTAL HEALTH care does not always mean travelling to a clinic for an appointment. Across Ontario, virtual therapy has become another way for people to connect with a therapist while managing work, family responsibilities, transportation, and other time demands.

For someone considering therapy for the first time, however, it can be difficult to know how virtual appointments work, whether they are appropriate for their needs, and how to choose the right therapist.

What Is Virtual Therapy?

Virtual therapy is psychotherapy provided through online appointments rather than in-person sessions at a physical clinic. Depending on the provider, sessions may take place through secure video platforms or other forms of remote communication.

Virtual therapy is not limited to individual sessions. Depending on the provider, couples therapy, family sessions, and some group programs can also be offered online.

The therapeutic process can be similar to in-person care. Clients can discuss concerns, work toward treatment goals, learn coping strategies, explore patterns in their thoughts and behaviour, and develop skills with the support of a trained mental health professional.

For many people, the main difference is simply where the session takes place.

Why Are People Choosing Virtual Therapy?

Convenience is one of the most obvious benefits. A virtual appointment eliminates the need to travel to and from a clinic, which can make it easier to fit therapy around work, school, family responsibilities, or other commitments.

This can be particularly useful for people who live outside major urban centres or who have difficulty finding a therapist nearby who works with their particular concerns.

Virtual care can also give people more options when choosing a therapist. Instead of limiting their search to professionals within a short driving distance, clients may be able to consider therapists located elsewhere in Ontario. A wider choice can also make it easier to find a therapist who speaks your first language or understands your cultural background, which can matter a great deal to how understood and comfortable a person feels.

Does Online Therapy Work?

A common question is whether therapy delivered online can provide the same type of support as in-person treatment.

Several forms of psychotherapy can be effectively delivered remotely, although suitability depends on the individual, the type of treatment, and the circumstances involved. Virtual therapy is not necessarily appropriate for every person or every situation.

Many established approaches can be delivered by video, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), EMDR, cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure (PE), emotion-focused therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, psychodynamic and attachment-based therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, and somatic-based therapy. Which approaches are available depends on the provider. For outpatient care, how well virtual therapy works usually comes down to the person’s situation and preferences more than to the approach itself.

The relationship between a client and therapist remains important regardless of whether sessions happen online or in person. Feeling comfortable communicating with a therapist, being able to discuss personal concerns openly, and having a treatment approach that fits your needs can all influence the therapy experience.

Choosing the Right Virtual Therapist

Choosing a virtual therapist is much like choosing one in person, because the goal is the same: finding the right therapist for you. Looking beyond a photograph and short biography can help.

Consider the therapist’s professional credentials, clinical experience, areas of expertise, and therapeutic approaches. Someone seeking support for anxiety may have different needs from someone looking for help with trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, parenting concerns, or chronic stress.

It can also help to ask whether the therapist receives regular consultation from colleagues or other experts, which supports them in thinking through complex situations.

Therapist fit is also important. A therapist may have considerable experience but still not be the right match for a particular person. Factors such as communication style, treatment approach, personality, and the client’s goals can all matter.

Fit can also be talked about openly once therapy has begun. A good therapist welcomes questions about how things are going, checks in on progress from time to time, and understands if a different match turns out to be the better choice.

Some psychotherapy practices use an intake or therapist-matching process to help clients identify a clinician whose experience and approach are appropriate for their needs.

What Should You Expect From a Virtual Session?

A virtual therapy session generally takes place from a private location using a computer, tablet, or phone. Before beginning, it is helpful to find a quiet space where you can speak openly without being interrupted.

For people who live far from a therapist, virtual care can open the door to support that might otherwise be hard to reach. The trade-off is that a therapist sees less of you on a screen than in a room, so it helps to position your camera to show your upper body and not only your face. Posture and gestures are part of how a therapist understands how you are doing.

The first appointment may involve discussing what brought you to therapy, your current concerns, relevant background information, and what you hope to accomplish. The therapist can then work with you to determine appropriate treatment goals and approaches.

It is normal for the first few sessions to feel a little awkward on screen, although that can be just as true of meeting in person. Many people also find it easier to open up from their own home or another familiar space, where they feel more at ease.

As with any form of therapy, the process can change over time as your needs and circumstances change.

Is Virtual Therapy Right for Everyone?

Virtual therapy can be a practical option for many people, but it is not automatically the right choice in every situation. Some individuals may prefer the structure and environment of an in-person clinic, while others may find it easier to communicate and feel comfortable from home.

Certain situations may also require a different level or type of mental health support. If someone is experiencing an urgent mental health crisis or immediate safety concerns, virtual psychotherapy may not be the appropriate first point of care.

Finding Virtual Therapy in Ontario

For people considering therapy, virtual care provides another way to access professional support without making geographic location the only factor in choosing a therapist.

When researching Virtual Therapy in Ontario, consider the therapist’s credentials, experience, areas of expertise, treatment approach, availability, and whether their services are appropriate for your needs.

The decision to start therapy can be a significant first step. Understanding how virtual therapy works and taking the time to find an appropriate therapist can make the process easier and more manageable.
