At the heart of Wortley Village, Cindy MacKinlay has established MacKinlay Mercantile as the neighbourhood’s go-to destination for curated gifts and creative home décor. Offering a thoughtfully selected mix of unique giftware, innovative kitchen essentials, gourmet foods and specialty items, she has created an in-store experience that invites discovery.
“Staying ahead of trends is a full-time job. I think if you follow your style and what your customers are expecting, things work out”
“I believe maintaining a consistent blend of quality products at a relative price for our customers is the most important model for our success,” MacKinlay explains. “Having lived in Wortley Village for years, I can say it’s the best area for great shops, restaurants, events and people.”
Success in today’s storefront retail environment, says MacKinlay, hinges on assembling a mix of unique products — from around the region and around the globe — that differentiate the store from bigger retailers. “Staying ahead of trends is a full-time job,” she says. “I think if you follow your style and what your customers are expecting, things work out.”

Also central to success is a close-knit team. “I am proud to have Marina, Greg and my right-hand gal, Cathy, on our team,” she says. “Cathy knows our products inside and out and has an excellent rapport with our clientele. I couldn’t do it without them.” Now, eight years in business, above all MacKinlay advises, “have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously.” ![]()
