20 Under 40: Michelle Campbell

In each issue, we highlight the continuing advancements of our 20 Under 40 program alumni and 20 Under 40 Foundation supporters. This month features Michelle Campbell, 20 Under 40 Class of 2017

AS A CHIROPRACTOR with a busy practice, a busy family—quite frankly, a busy life—Dr. Michelle Campbell spends a lot of time and effort keeping things aligned.

Her patients, of course, are a priority, and judging by the number of awards and accolades she has received, she is doing a good job on that front. Since hanging out her shingle in 2008, she’s grown Campbell Care Centre from a single treatment room to a multi-discipline healthcare clinic offering chiropractic, massage therapy, psychotherapy, physiotherapy and Reiki.

Along the way, Campbell has captured nominations and awards from both the chiropractic and the business communities. And two years ago, she and husband, Chris O’Hagan, doubled their family size when their twin boy and girl were born.

“It’s been a busy two years—super tough and challenging,” Campbell says, “but also very rewarding.”

“I value the ability to communicate and collaborate with other practitioners. Now, with the patient’s permission, we are able to discuss as a team why someone is not responding as expected, or what kinds of treatments might be best” —Michelle Campbell

Last year, she purchased a commercial property downtown and moved Campbell Care Centre into a 3,500-square-foot space with seven treatment areas on Queens Avenue at William Street, and in September O’Hagan joined the business as operations manager.

Campbell says having multiple disciplines under one roof provides patients with a number of complementary treatment options to help them achieve their individual goals.

“I always start with getting to know the person, what’s going on their life and what their goals are. It could be anything from minimizing back pain to being able to run a marathon—or keeping up with two-year-old twins,” Campbell laughs.

“I value the ability to communicate and collaborate with other practitioners. I have always made referrals. Now, with the patient’s permission, we are able to discuss as a team why someone is not responding as expected, or what kinds of treatments might be best.”

As part of her practice, Campbell has developed a library of about 80 custom videos addressing common concerns or questions: What is the best pillow to use to minimize neck pain? What can you do on your own to alleviate plantar fasciitis? What are the best stretches to do when you are pregnant? (This is an area that Campbell has a specific interest in—she’s completed post-graduate training in the area of family wellness, including specialty studies and clinical competence for infants, children and the care in pregnancy.)

The videos are accessible both on the firm’s website and on a YouTube channel, and Campbell will also often send specific videos to patients to augment the work she does with them in the office.

One commitment Campbell had to step back from during her pregnancy was volunteer chiropractic work with the Salvation Army Centre of Hope, which she did for seven years. “With chiropractic, I could help people minimize pain without being as reliant on drugs and opioids. Some had developed drug addictions due to pain meds,” she says.

It’s a role she hopes to return to as the demands of the new facility and young family balance out. “I like to give back and help people, and we saw people who really valued that care. The treatments gave them a little lift and some help to get their lives back on track—and a few people were able to get back to work.” Kym Wolfe
