Making modular work
Shovels hit the ground at the first of three planned modular construction projects targeting affordable housing

THE CITY OF London, along with the Housing Development Corporation, London, is moving forward with plans to construct affordable apartments in southwest London.
The four-storey building at 122 Baseline Road West will be constructed by London-founded, Mississauga-based EllisDon. Utilizing module construction techniques and pre-fabricated panels assembled on site, the property will have 61 units comprised of 41 one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom, and four three-bedroom apartments.

The building will also have outdoor amenity areas along with 61 parking spaces. Plans for the project have been submitted for permit and site preparation has begun.
The project, first announced last December, is one of three modular building projects targeting affordable housing in the city. Sites for additional buildings have yet to be announced by the city.

“Safe and affordable housing is a right for everyone and it is a top priority for our council,” says Mayor Ed Holder. “Initiatives like this promote greater dignity for individuals and greater economic prosperity for our communities.”
The project, first announced last December, was approved with funding support from the provincial and federal governments, including the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The City of London and Housing Development Corporation also contributed funding, surplus land and planning to support the need for affordable housing.

The building is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
