I recently had the honour of touring Indwell’s nearly complete Embassy Commons project in Old East Village. The number of Londoners dependant on housing assistance is overwhelming. But there is light at the end of this tunnel and Indwell is one of the fabulous organizations making a difference. Through their network of funding sources, they turn every $1 donated into $10 of investment.
Indwell has been operating Woodfield Gate (356 Dundas Street) for a few years already. Embassy Commons is close to completion and will provide assisted housing for another 72 individuals in need. In SoHo, on the old Victoria Hospital site, they are converting the two remaining historic buildings into another 120 units. Indwell has two more projects moving at record speed in St. Thomas as well.

The run-up of house valuations has created enormous wealth in our community, yet there has never been greater need than there is today. The recent capital gains from the rise in real estate values should be leveraged on behalf of those who don’t own, and therefore are at the mercy of the economic system. Homeowners, builders, developers, material suppliers and others need to become part of the solution. The dividends will include a more livable city, a more equitable city ― and a warm heart on behalf of those who make a difference.
There is so much good being done in our city, by well-meaning, hard-working organizations and volunteers. I often speak about the health of our community; solving homelessness and improving the stock of affordable housing is one of the greatest gifts we can give our city. London’s health is tied to how well we treat and care for the most marginalized.
