The Details

If you’re out there thinking that one of London’s many early 20th-century homes isn’t quite historic enough for you, then let us present to you 355 Simcoe Street: a designated heritage property first built in 1876, which is now a chic one-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow with a huge backyard. Pound for pound (er, square-foot for square-foot?) it’s one of the funkiest spaces we’ve seen in a while.

You won’t miss it from the street ― it’s the white house with the bright red door, a charming flourish to the exterior of this home and a bit of a tease to the colourful world inside. As you go through the door, you’ll find the home’s main living room, with wide-plank hardwood flooring, lots of exposed brick throughout the home and conduit wiring that lends the place a bit of industrial loft vibe.

On your left, as you enter, is the home’s one and only bedroom, a large room with more exposed brick and a sliding barn door leading to the bathroom. The bedroom has two windows, allowing lots of natural light into the space, and has lots of room for wardrobe cabinets (which you’ll need ― the room doesn’t have a built-in closet). The bathroom ― painted a splashy red to match the front door ― features a walk-in shower and has two doors to allow access from both the bedroom and the back hallway.

The eat-in kitchen toward the back of the home features recently installed (2016) white cabinetry, as well as butcher-block counters and a farmhouse sink to maintain the heritage vibe. It features a stainless-steel fridge, dishwasher and gas range, with two windows and a sliding door leading out to the backyard. The back patio will be an absolute joy in the summer, looking out over the huge backyard, which features storage sheds, a stone-tiled fire pit and lots of green space.

A heritage home won’t be everybody’s cup of tea, but for those who appreciate the historic charm and unique features it has to offer, this property is certainly worth a look. And the SoHo location has lots to offer, with easy access to the downtown and the Thames Valley Parkway nearby.
