Passion: Mario Vella’s Victory Against ALS Annual Invitational Golf Tournament
“When I started the tournament, I was going through a difficult time because my marriage had broken down. But I felt like I had to do something, mainly so other people didn’t have to go through this. I wanted to give other people hope.
The tournament, which was held on June 27, is now in its 19th year. It supports ALS research at the Robarts Research Institute and London Health Sciences Centre, and also assists me with my needs. I had to stop giving everything to research about 12 years ago because my needs were becoming too expensive. I wish I was able to donate more because there is a shortage of funds for research.
Tournament day is a humbling day. It is relief combined with a sense of satisfaction when it is over. I have to pinch myself because I am so grateful that I am able to do it, and I’m so thankful for all the people who have supported me over the last 20 years.
I want everyone to know that they have made a difference in my life and the life of others who are going through same thing. I want them to go home knowing they are making a difference in the world.”
