Most interesting gaming niches in the world
As gaming continues to grow, it’s niches become even more well-defined, offering a diverse range of options appealing to various types of gamers
LONDONERS LOVE VIDEO games. In fact, there’s a bit of an arcade and retro gaming resurgence occurring around the city. In nearby Toronto, places like the Levelup Reality Virtual Arcade, Tilt Arcade Bar, and The Rec Room have popped up to serve locals who want to get in on the action live.
The new interest in arcades isn’t solely based on retro interests (more on this below). Instead, many modern arcades offer old-school hits like Pac-Man, along with more modern iterations like multiplayer VR options and cheeky new arcade releases like Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.
The interest in live gaming establishments is linked to the ongoing growth of the gaming industry. Throughout Canada, gamers are more active than ever before. They’re generating new interest in eSports careers in higher education, hosting high-profile eSports competitions, and managing big-name studios.
But that doesn’t mean all local interests are mainstream. In fact, as gaming continues to grow, it’s niches become even more well-defined. While many gamers can name a few fringe categories, others might surprise you. (Hint: they’re not all digital.)
Poker
Poker is one of the world’s most enduring favorites. Back in the 1990s, the game made the leap from analog to digital. Today, most players around the world compete online. In fact, many platforms are designed to help new players learn the ropes, then incrementally improve their skills.
For example, the PokerStars Power Path program outlines how players can advance from virtual competitions to live tournaments. This makes it easy for players to get the most out of their gaming experience no matter where they’re located.
Collectible Card Games
Just like poker, some beloved games predate the rise of competitive, multiplayer games. Enter the world of collectible card games, aka CCGs. These games usually revolve around fantasy worlds and creatures. Through competitive matches, players slowly build out a formidable deck with powerful cards.
Magic: The Gathering is the most well-known analog CCG. However, this niche is now switching to digital—or DCCGs. New DCCGs include Hearthstone, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, and Marvel Snap. Though these games usually fly under the radar of mainstream gaming publications, active player counts are in the millions globally.
Hardcore Simulations
Simulations are some of the most popular games in the world. Many are within the casual realm, designed to let players unwind and socialize with others. But within the simulation genre, there’s a greater distinction when it comes to hardcore, highly produced simulations—ones that blur the line between real and fake.
One of the oldest is Microsoft Flight Simulator, which first hit the market in 1977. The latest releases today are regularly played by pilots and aviation hopefuls. Though the game doesn’t substitute a flying course, it’s incredibly realistic—down to the tarmacs in each city.
Then there’s the iRacing platform, which emerged in 2008. This hyper-realistic simulation lets PC gamers create a simulation setup of just about any car—from Big Rigs to Mustangs. They can purchase peripheral items like steering wheels, gear shifts, and pedals to create a seamless driving experience. As with poker, they can also compete with other players around the world.
Another notable hardcore simulation is Kerbal Space Program, released in 2015. This game requires players to launch a ship into space. The catch? They’re going to use real-world physics and orbital maneuvers to get that ship into space. It’s so realistic that its been shouted-out by groups like the ESA and NASA.
Geo-Location
Let’s round this list off with another surprise hit: geo-location trivia. These browser games provide players with a Google street view (or similar visual hint) of a location. Using only what they see on the screen, players must guess where in the world the location is.
What’s behind the big boom in geo-location gaming? Though the game doesn’t have traditional gaming mechanics, it’s proved popular for game streamers who have global followings. Similar to puzzles and numbers challenges, geography is universally appealing.
