It pays to be green

Green Economy London is offering five $1,000 Green Project Grant awards to member businesses looking to make sustainability changes

GREEN ECONOMY LONDON, a local organization that empowers and supports businesses in setting and achieving sustainability targets, is excited to share an opportunity for their members to make sustainability changes at their facilities.

Green Economy London members can choose from a variety of projects to apply for that will help their organization save money and reduce their environmental impact. Eligible project categories include greenhouse gas emission reduction projects, water reduction projects, waste diversion projects, environmental stewardship projects and consultants/audits.

Five applicants will be selected to each receive a $1,000 grant after going through the Green Economy London Advisory Committee review process.

The Green Project Grant is an exciting opportunity for Green Economy London members to make strides towards a green recovery with the full support and resources of Green Economy London and their network.

Along with Green Economy London and their host organization ― the London Environmental Network ― the 2020 Green Project Grant is made possible with the support of Convertus, the London Community Foundation and The City of London.

Last year’s grant was awarded to Green Economy London members On the Move Organics and Booch Organic Kombucha, who shared a $5,000 financial award provided by the London Community Foundation for sustainability projects.

Last year’s Green Project Grant recipients, Booch Organic Kombucha and On the Move Organics, shared a $5,000 award and made changes to their businesses that delivered both cost and sustainability improvements

On the Move Organics used their award to install a hoop house ― a passively heated greenhouse as part of their fossil fuel reduction strategy. The hoop house will provide an extended growing season and drastically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from otherwise trucking in the produce.

The second recipient of the 2019 Green Project Grant, Booch Organic Kombucha, installed a diaphragm pump into their brewing process, which will save them roughly 3,000 litres of waste kombucha each year. The pump allows them to move all the liquid out of their tanks and lines to ensure no product is being wasted. Through an engineering report provided by Enviro-Stewards, it is estimated that this project will save them over $20,000 per year with a payback period of less than two weeks. This translates to a savings of five tonnes of CO2e/year and 8.3m3/year.

Cost-savings and sustainability are increasingly becoming priorities for businesses as they recover from Covid-19 and address the climate emergency. The Green Project Grant is an exciting opportunity for Green Economy London members to make strides towards a green recovery with the full support and resources of Green Economy London and their network.
